Airbox and Filter Removal Test

Aim

As an air filter hole makes such a dramatic difference (compared to the cost), we decided to see how much power could be gained by simply removing the airbox and filter all together. We are not suggesting that this is how the scooter should be run, however it should give an indication of the hp increase possible through making the carb breathe easier

Method

• 1. Dyno a scooter with the airbox and filter on

  2. Remove the airbox and filter and dyno it again

Results

We found for a Pinasco 215 we increased the hp from 12.6 to 13.1 in peak hp, more impressive was a broad increase in power across the entire range. We did not adjust jetting and the engine did run leaner (obviously), with correct jetting the hp increase may be more and correct jetting would be required for reliability.

Conclusion

We should try building a high flow airbox + filer and rerun with correct jetting. We would expect to see good improvement in performance with relatively small cost.
